Mesenchymal stem cells: Their anti-inflammatory and regenerative action make stem cells a new potential therapy in rheumatic diseases.
line of research
Systemic sclerosis and pulmonary involvement.
In addition to spondyloarthritis, GESPA is interested in systemic sclerosis and pulmonary involvement.
Systemic sclerosis is another rheumatic disease. This disease is less frequent. The principal organ compromise is the skin; however, it can affect the internal organs, especially the lungs. When there is advanced pulmonary compromise there are few treatment options.
Several studies have demonstrated mesenchymal stem cells as an effective and safe treatment alternative. We have achieved the infusion of these cells to one patient with lung compromise.
We designed a protocol for the infusion of mesenchymal stem cells to four patients with systemic sclerosis and advanced pulmonary compromise that we hope to complete in the proximal months.

line of research
Osteoarthritis and mesenchymal stem cells.
In association with stem cell banks, GESPA is trying to bring a treatment option to patients suffering from osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis is becoming a prevalent disease associated with the aging population. Two in three will have the disease at the age of eighty. Osteoarthritis generates pain, and functional limitation and affects the quality of life. There exist many alternatives for treating the pain and slowing its progression such as physical therapy, weight control, among others, and in advanced cases articular replacement surgery.
The mesenchymal stem cells were demonstrated to be a promising treatment for osteoarthritis.
GESPA is assessing its utility in the treatment of various stages of osteoarthritis.
