GESPA

GESPA (by its acronym in Spanish Grupo de investigación en ESPondiloArtritis) was born in the program of rheumatology at the Universidad de La Sabana. The principal investigators are Dr. John Londoño and Dr. Ana Maria Santos who have centered their investigation career on the characterization of the spondyloarthropathies in the Colombian population.

The residents of the program and associated professors contribute to the different projects conducted in the group.

The principal objective of GESPA is to feed and grow the knowledge of the disease, so patients who suffer from spondyloarthritis in Colombia and Latin America can take advantage of it, achieving an earlier diagnosis and treatment, and avoiding complications and sequels.

Now GESPA is conducting different projects:

  • Characterization of the Colombian population with spondyloarthritis: specific HLA (Human Leucocyte Antigen) for our population, risk factors for severe disease, predominant symptoms, and disease evolution with or without treatment.
  • Develop tools that allow an easier and earlier imaging diagnosis (radiography and resonance)
  • The association between the different patterns of spondyloarthritis and the inflammatory profile for example cytokines (immune mediators) in the blood samples of the patients.
  • Create alliances with local, regional, and international associations of spondyloarthritis.
  • By networking with groups and associations of patients support their union and meetings to achieve a better understanding of the disease among them.
